now

They worship him.

They chant his name at rallies. They weep when they see him. They declare he was sent by God. Some have even replaced pictures of Jesus in their homes with portraits of Donald Trump. To outsiders, this looks like madness. To insiders, it feels like revelation.

But this isn’t just about Trump. This is about something older, deeper, and far more dangerous: what Paul calls in 2 Thessalonians 2 "the mystery of iniquity."

In that chapter, Paul says three things will mark the unraveling of the world: a spiritual force called the mystery of iniquity, a human figure called the man of lawlessness, and a great falling away—an apostasy. These three aren’t random. They are stages of a single drama. A dark spiritual force begins to take root in the world. Then it manifests through a man. And through that man, a mass spiritual deception takes hold.

Whether Trump is the Antichrist is beyond the scope of this argument. What matters is that he fits the prophetic pattern perfectly.

He is a man of lawlessness in every sense. He rejects legal limits, defies moral norms, rewards cruelty, punishes truth, mocks righteousness, and flaunts his impunity. But what makes him spiritually significant is not simply that he breaks the law. It’s that millions of people rejoice when he does it.

That’s the mystery.

That’s what Paul meant when he called it iniquity—evil not merely done in secret, but done with celebration. Lawlessness as virtue. Cruelty as strength. Deception as strategy. And more than that—lawlessness as worship.

Because the truth is: people don’t just want to break free of God’s law. They want someone powerful enough to bless their rebellion. Someone who can make their darkness feel like light. That’s what the man of lawlessness provides. He doesn’t abolish religion. He retools it.

And that’s exactly what we’re seeing.

A large segment of the American church has undergone something like a spiritual inversion. They still speak the name of Jesus, but they follow another gospel entirely—a gospel of domination, violence, grievance, and pride. Trump didn’t create that movement. But he became its messiah. The man through whom a generation could transfer its rebellion and still call it righteousness.

That’s why Paul links the rise of this man to a great apostasy. Because the man of lawlessness doesn’t just gather the wicked. He deceives the faithful. He doesn’t just polarize a nation. He splits the church. He doesn’t just tempt sinners. He seduces saints.

Jesus warned us this would happen. In Matthew 24, he says, "At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people." That’s not a vague warning. It’s a description of now.

Families torn apart. Friendships shattered. Churches splitting. Truth ridiculed. Love replaced by tribal rage.

This is what happens when a nation opens itself to the mystery of iniquity. The law is not just broken. It is inverted. Evil becomes good. Good becomes evil. And the person who best embodies that inversion is exalted as a savior.

So no, Trump might not be the Antichrist. But he is a mirror.

And what he reveals is terrifying: that millions of people in this country, many of them in the church, are ready to abandon truth for a lie, unity for division, Christ for Caesar.

That is the real danger. Not just what Trump does. But what he uncovers.

And what he prepares the world to receive.

Thanks for reading TRUTH SPEAKS! data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton">Subscribe now

Something poisonous has crept into the heart of American Christianity. It’s not just that many Christians today are angry, reactionary, or judgmental. It’s that many have come to believe that cruelty itself is a sign of faithfulness—that drawing hard lines, casting people out, and calling down judgment on others is not just allowed, but required.

But beneath all this rage is something even darker: a fundamental rejection of the Gospel.

Cruel Christianity is not just politically dangerous or socially corrosive—it is the fruit of a theology that has lost all contact with grace.

And here’s the irony: the people who preach this gospel of cruelty are often the ones who talk most loudly about sin. They’re obsessed with policing the boundaries of who’s “in” and who’s “out,” who’s pure enough to belong, and who needs to be rebuked or exiled. But if you press beneath the surface, what you’ll find is not holiness. It’s fear. It’s self-righteousness. And it’s a profound inability to accept the grace of God—not just for others, but for themselves.

The Fear Behind the Cruelty

This is why so many modern-day Pharisees react with fury when they see God’s grace extended to people they don’t think deserve it. They’ve built their identity on being “the righteous ones.” The holy remnant. The ones who still follow the rules. And when they see someone they despise welcomed into the fold without punishment, it feels like an attack on their worth.

But this isn’t a new problem. In fact, it’s at the heart of the Gospel story.

When Jesus said that “the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you” (Matthew 21:31), he wasn’t talking to the Romans or the pagans. He was talking to the religious leaders. The ones who believed they had secured their place with God through correct beliefs, moral discipline, and social respectability.

They couldn’t accept that grace might be freely given to people they had spent their lives condemning.

And in truth, they couldn’t accept grace at all.

You Cannot Give What You Haven’t Received

“And that’s why grace is the beating heart of Christian faith. Not because sin doesn’t matter. But because we are all equally in need of mercy.”

This is the central tragedy of the gospel of cruelty. The people who live by it are often blind to the fact that they need grace just as much as the people they’re condemning.

Jesus said plainly, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” (Matthew 7:1). But in many Christian circles today, that command is immediately followed by a thousand exceptions: “Well, we’re just judging righteously. We’re holding people accountable.”

But if you spend any real time with the Christian doctrine of sin, you come to a startling truth: there is no judgment that isn’t hypocritical. Because we are all sinners. We are all guilty.

Jesus said that looking at someone with lust makes you an adulterer (Matthew 5:28). That harboring anger in your heart makes you a murderer (Matthew 5:21–22). The standard is not “better than them.” The standard is perfection (Matthew 5:48). And none of us meets it.

That’s why we don’t get to be the judge. That’s why Jesus warns us that the measure we use will be measured back to us (Matthew 7:2). And that’s why grace is the beating heart of Christian faith. Not because sin doesn’t matter. But because we are all equally in need of mercy.

The Dangerous Comfort of a Works-Based Identity

“That’s the scandal of grace. It’s not just that it’s unfair. It’s that it refuses to validate our spiritual pride.”

But for many Christians today, that’s a hard pill to swallow. Because a life built on self-righteousness needs someone else to be worse. It needs contrast. It needs “those people” to point at.

And when that righteousness is threatened—when grace starts flowing too freely, when forgiveness is offered without punishment, when love crosses the boundaries they’ve drawn—the response isn’t joy. It’s rage.

This is why Jesus tells the story of the workers in the vineyard who are all paid the same, no matter how long they worked (Matthew 20:1–16). The ones who labored all day are furious. “You’ve made them equal to us,” they say. And the master replies, “Are you envious because I am generous?”

That’s the scandal of grace. It’s not just that it’s unfair. It’s that it refuses to validate our spiritual pride.

And to those who cannot accept that, cruelty feels more comforting than grace. Condemnation feels safer than forgiveness. Judgment feels like control.

But it is a false gospel. And it leads nowhere but death.

Grace Is Still the Only Way

“But the truth has not changed: the gate is narrow not because the standard is high, but because pride cannot fit through it.”

The message of Jesus was never “be better than others.” It was “come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). It was “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

And it was this message—not one of moral laxity, but of divine mercy—that got him killed.

The religious elites couldn’t stand it then, and they can’t stand it now.

But the truth has not changed: the gate is narrow not because the standard is high, but because pride cannot fit through it.

To enter the kingdom of God, you must be willing to kneel. You must be willing to admit your need. You must be willing to receive grace—and extend it to others.

And until American Christianity remembers that, it will continue preaching a gospel of cruelty in the name of the One who died to end it.

Thanks for reading TRUTH SPEAKS! I read it. I preach from it. I treasure it. But I don’t believe it’s perfect. And I don’t believe God ever asked me to.

For many Christians, especially in evangelical and fundamentalist circles, that sentence would be enough to brand me a heretic. But it’s precisely because I take Scripture seriously that I feel called to say it out loud. The Bible is not God. The Bible is a witness. It points us toward a God who is alive, relational, loving, just, and always speaking. But when we treat the Bible as flawless—as a fixed code of divine law without nuance, context, or human fingerprints—we turn it into something it was never meant to be. We turn it into an idol.

“When the Bible replaces the living voice of the Spirit—when we treat its most troubling texts as if they must perfectly reflect God's eternal character—we have created a golden calf out of the very thing meant to lead us to the true God.”

The doctrine of biblical inerrancy teaches that the Bible is "without error in all that it affirms." This belief was codified in the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, a document that became foundational to American evangelical theology. Its goal was to defend the authority of Scripture in a time of growing secularism and theological liberalism. But over time, it hardened. What began as an attempt to safeguard reverence turned into rigidity. The Bible became less a living text and more a weapon. Less a source of wisdom and more a litmus test for belonging.

As writers like Peter Enns and Rachel Held Evans have pointed out, this view of Scripture has done profound damage. It has created a generation of Christians trained to think in binaries: either the Bible is completely perfect, or it's worthless. Either every command must be applied literally, or nothing can be trusted. There is no space for tension. No room for wrestling. No patience for the slow, sacred work of discernment.

But this is not faithfulness. It is fear.

And it is a form of idolatry. When the Bible replaces the living voice of the Spirit—when we treat its most troubling texts as if they must perfectly reflect God's eternal character—we have created a golden calf out of the very thing meant to lead us to the true God. We worship the form instead of the presence. We mistake the map for the destination.

“The Bible is not a cage. It is a map. And if we follow it rightly, it will always lead us to a person. Not a proposition. Not a doctrine. But Christ.”

If God is not the author of confusion, then our theology should reflect moral coherence. And that coherence is not found by flattening Scripture into a single voice. It is found in the person of Jesus. He is the Word made flesh. Not a text, but a life. Not a proposition, but a presence. Everything we read must be filtered through him.

This is not just about LGBTQ inclusion, though that is one of the clearest places where the damage of inerrancy shows. The Bible has also been used to justify slavery, to silence women, to blame the poor for their suffering, and to endorse authoritarianism through selective readings of Romans 13. These are not random misreadings. They are symptoms of a deeper problem: a refusal to acknowledge that God’s revelation is always mediated through culture, through history, and through imperfect people. And that is exactly why we need the Spirit.

The Bible is not a cage. It is a map. And if we follow it rightly, it will always lead us to a person. Not a proposition. Not a doctrine. But Christ.

The Word of God is not bound in ink. It is alive. It speaks. out in real time: a Supreme Court that seems paralyzed by the weight of the current political moment: caught between upholding the law and protecting its own relevance.

In recent rulings, the Court has at times sided with Donald Trump, and at other times ruled against him, but in every case, it has tiptoed. When it handed Trump a major win by recognizing broad presidential immunity, conservative justices emphasized that the ruling was “for the ages,” as if to reassure themselves that it wasn’t really about Trump at all. When the Court unanimously ruled against his administration in the Abrego Garcia deportation case, it still let key deadlines lapse and warned against “unconstitutional impositions” on presidential power, effectively softening the blow. And even when lower court judges have accused Trump’s administration of defying orders and threatening the rule of law, the justices have remained cautious, careful not to provoke.

That caution reveals the deeper crisis. The Court is no longer behaving like an independent branch of government, but like a cornered institution: calculating when, how, and to what extent it dares to oppose Trump, lest he turn the full weight of Congress and the executive against it. What the justices haven’t yet realized is that once you start thinking that way, you’ve already lost. If the rule of law survives only at the pleasure of a president, then the rule of law is already gone.

Donald Trump doesn’t need to ignore the courts to destroy them. He can do it legally. And this time, there may be no one left to stop him.

For years, many of us held on to a fragile hope: that no matter how dysfunctional our politics became, the courts would step in when it mattered most. Not because they had always protected our rights — they hadn’t. From Dred Scott to Plessy, from Korematsu to Shelby County, the Supreme Court has a long and painful history of enabling oppression, shielding power, and abandoning principle. Even in recent years, it has gutted voting rights, ended affirmative action, and insulated presidents from accountability. But despite all that, there was still a belief — or maybe a desperation — that when the moment of crisis came, when democracy itself was on the line, the justices would rise above ideology, politics, and fear to defend the rule of law.

That belief is crumbling because the rule of law has already collapsed.

“The question now isn’t how Trump might seize control of the judiciary.
It’s what happens once he does.”

What we’re witnessing isn’t a warning. It’s a preview. We have a sitting president who has made his contempt for the Constitution explicit. He talks openly about ending birthright citizenship, running for a third term, and using state power to punish his enemies. He’s surrounded by enablers who treat his delusions as doctrine and backed by a political base that has shown, over nearly a decade, there is no line they won’t cross for him. And while his power grows, the institutions we once counted on to resist him are caving one by one.

There is no center of resistance. The Democratic Party is fractured and reactive. The legal profession is hedging and retreating. Universities, media outlets, and civil society groups that once claimed to be bulwarks against authoritarianism are increasingly silent — or worse, accommodating. No one wants to be the next target, and so everyone waits for someone else to take the risk.

And in that vacuum, Trump expands. He consolidates. He tests the system and learns that each time he pushes, nothing pushes back.

This is the world we live in now. The guardrails are gone. The brakes are off. And if we keep pretending that the courts — or the Constitution, or the vague memory of “norms” — will somehow restrain him when it really counts, we’ll miss the truth staring us in the face.

Trump doesn’t need to dismantle the courts tomorrow. They’re already shrinking in his shadow today.

The question now isn’t how Trump might seize control of the judiciary.
It’s what happens once he does.

Because the most important question we face is no longer if the courts fall.
It’s what comes after.

The Law Will Still Exist — But It Will Belong to Trump

Americans think of tyranny as lawless: the strongman who breaks rules and defies the Constitution. But modern authoritarianism doesn’t work like that. It doesn’t destroy law. It inflitrates it. Colonizes it. It bends statutes, procedures, and institutions until they no longer serve the people but the regime.

That’s what comes after the courts fall. Not chaos. Not martial law. But something colder, more insidious: the illusion of order. The machinery of justice will still turn, but its purpose will be inverted. The law will no longer constrain power. It will serve it.

There Will Be No Neutral Forum

Imagine a world where every lawsuit challenging Trump’s abuses is dismissed before it’s even heard. Where voting rights cases, challenges to executive overreach, and constitutional claims about free speech, due process, or equal protection are declared “non-justiciable” by statute — barred from even reaching a courtroom. Where federal judges are no longer selected for independence or experience, but for personal loyalty to the president, ideological purity, and a willingness to bend the law to serve power.

In this world, the courtroom still exists. The robes are still worn. The gavels still fall. But the theater of justice has replaced justice itself.

The courtroom becomes a stage. The verdict is already known. The process is the performance.

You can still file your case. You can still cite the Constitution. You can still make eloquent arguments and appeal to precedent. But none of it will matter. The outcome was decided before you ever walked in — not by law, but by design.

And the scariest part? To the average observer, everything will look normal. The legal forms will be filled. The hearings will be held. The judges will issue opinions. But behind the façade, the core has rotted. What remains is law as spectacle: a tool to legitimize power, not restrain it.

That’s not some distant possibility. It’s the direction we’re already moving.

Without Appeal, There Is No Rule of Law

Law only matters if there’s somewhere to go when it’s violated. That’s the meaning of appeal — not just as a legal mechanism, but as a moral foundation. It’s the promise that no matter how powerful the abuser, how brazen the violation, or how high the stakes, there is still a neutral place where truth can be spoken and wrongs can be judged. A place where power is subject to principle. Where facts matter. Where outcomes are not predetermined by political allegiance or personal loyalty.

Take that away, and the entire meaning of law collapses. Not just its structure — its soul.

Without a real system of appeal, law becomes a set of rituals: performative, empty, staged. Rights become suggestions, granted or withheld at the pleasure of those in charge. The Constitution becomes a prop in someone else’s show, invoked for aesthetic, ignored in substance.

Troublingly, the Constitution doesn’t prevent this. It doesn’t guarantee independence, or enforce accountability, or supply courage. It assumes them. Our entire system was built on faith — not religious faith, but institutional faith: that power would check power, that ambition would balance ambition, that leaders would be restrained not just by rules, but by shame.

But shame only works if the powerful feel it. Trump doesn’t. His allies don’t. And the Constitution offers no backup plan for when the people in charge stop pretending they care.

He’s already shown us what happens when no one tells him no. The question now is what happens when no one can.

After the Fall

So what do we do when the courts fall?

We tell the truth. We refuse to pretend the system is still working when it clearly isn’t. We stop clinging to illusions of normalcy, and we start preparing — morally, spiritually, and politically — for what comes next.

Because let’s be clear: the collapse of the rule of law, as we’ve known it, will be a rupture. But it will not be the first. And it may not be the worst.

For most of American history, the law has been an enemy of justice, not an ally. After all, Slavery was legal. Jim Crow was legal. The mass disenfranchisement of women, the persecution of LGBTQ people, the internment of Japanese Americans — all legal. The miracle wasn’t that the law once aligned with justice. The miracle is that, over time, through the sacrifice and struggle of ordinary people, it sometimes came to.

But when that happened, it wasn’t because the courts were generous. It was because movements forced them to listen. It was because people believed in a law higher than the one written by the powerful: a law grounded in love, in justice, and in the unshakable truth that all people are created equal.

That’s the tradition we inherit. And that’s the fight we’re entering again.

When Dr. King was arrested in Birmingham for protesting segregation — a crime under the unjust laws of that time — he did eventually appeal his conviction, all the way to the Supreme Court. But he didn’t wait for the courts to rescue him. From his jail cell, he issued the most powerful defense of civil disobedience in American history. “An unjust law,” he wrote, “is no law at all.” Obedience to such a law, he said, was disobedience to God.

This is what it means to live by a higher law: to walk the path of the prophets, not the politicians. The prophets did not beg for legitimacy from unjust rulers. They stood outside the gates and pronounced judgment. They told the truth, even when it was dangerous. Especially when it was dangerous.

That is our task now.

We are entering a time when obedience will be easy, and conscience will be costly. When cowardice will be dressed up as civility, and complicity will call itself balance. But we’ve seen this before. And we are not the first to face it.

We may not stop the courts from falling. But we can stop ourselves from falling with them. We can still be the people who remember what justice looks like, what truth sounds like, what love requires.

And if we are willing to stand for that — with courage, with clarity, with the willingness to sacrifice — then even in the ruins of the old order, we can begin to build something new.

Not a restoration. A reformation.

Not law as it was. But law as it should be.

Law that serves justice, not power. Law that protects the vulnerable, not the strong. Law that is, in the deepest sense, sacred.

That higher law still exists. And it’s calling us now.

Thanks for reading TRUTH SPEAKS! data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton">Subscribe now

For over a century, American power has been defined by dominance. The U.S. has not just been a powerful nation—it has been the global hegemon, shaping the world order through a mix of military force, economic leverage, and political influence. From the Cold War’s proxy conflicts to the post-9/11 interventions, America has operated under the assumption that it must lead, dictate, and impose its will wherever and whenever it chooses.

But that era is ending.

Donald Trump’s return to the White House didn’t cause this decline, but it exposed and accelerated it. His administration revealed that America’s foreign policy wasn’t built on a noble mission to protect democracy and human rights—it was built on self-interest, exploitation, and brute power. Trump, in his signature style, abandoned any pretense of morality and instead pursued raw transactionalism, treating allies like business partners who owed him tribute and enemies like bad deals to be renegotiated. His version of "America First" stripped away the diplomatic niceties, showing the world that America’s role as global leader was not about shared values, but about control.

And now, in Trump’s second term as president, he is making it clear that his goal is to double down on empire, tearing apart institutions America itself built, weakening alliances, and wielding power as a weapon of pure self-interest.

But here’s the truth: America cannot return to its old imperial ways, and it cannot survive by retreating into isolationism either. The world has changed. No nation—not America, not China, not anyone—will ever again enjoy the unchallenged dominance that the U.S. wielded for the last 75 years. The age of empire is over.

The real question is: What comes next?

The End of Empire Doesn’t Have to Mean the End of America

America’s problem isn’t just that its empire is fading—it’s that it has no clear idea of what comes after empire. The old bipartisan consensus, which viewed the U.S. as the world's unquestioned leader, is collapsing, and Trumpism is offering the worst possible alternative: a reckless, isolationist, nationalist power grab that will only make America weaker.

But there is another way.

The U.S. doesn’t need to dominate the world to remain strong. Instead of clinging to a doomed imperial fantasy, America has an opportunity—perhaps its last—to redefine power in a way that actually serves its people and the world.

What might that look like?

1. Security Without Imperialism

One of the strongest arguments in favor of American global leadership is that it has helped prevent another catastrophic world war. And that’s true—to an extent. But the absence of great-power war is not proof of benevolent leadership. The U.S. has presided over a world order in which millions have died in proxy wars, coups, and economic interventions, especially in the developing world and the Global South.

If America wants to truly be a force for stability, it needs to rethink its approach to global security. That doesn’t mean total disengagement, but it does mean scaling back military interventions that serve no strategic purpose beyond projecting dominance. It means moving away from the doctrine of "forever wars" and rejecting the impulse to overthrow governments that do not serve American interests. Instead, the U.S. should focus on cooperative security—working with allies and even former adversaries to reduce global tensions rather than inflame them.

This also means reforming America’s military-industrial complex, which has long prioritized war as a business venture rather than a last resort. Shifting defense priorities from aggression to genuine defense will not only reduce unnecessary conflicts but will also free up resources for urgent domestic issues.

2. Power Beyond Military Might

For too long, American power has been defined by bombs, bases, and brute force. But the 21st century is proving that real power is no longer just about military supremacy—it’s about economic networks, technological leadership, and strategic alliances.

China understands this. While the U.S. has spent decades funneling trillions into military interventions, China has been building infrastructure, investing in emerging economies, and securing influence through trade and technological expansion.

If America wants to remain powerful, it must think beyond the battlefield. This means prioritizing technological innovation, economic resilience, and diplomatic leadership over military dominance. It means recognizing that influence is now about controlling supply chains, energy markets, and global institutions—not just aircraft carriers and nuclear arsenals.

And crucially, it means abandoning the failed neoliberal economic policies that have hollowed out the American middle class in the name of corporate profits. A strong America must be built on a strong and secure workforce, not just Wall Street gains.

3. Global Cooperation Instead of Exploitation

The biggest flaw in America’s imperial model has been its reliance on exploitation over cooperation. Whether through predatory trade agreements, the weaponization of the U.S. dollar, or the enforcement of economic policies that benefit American corporations at the expense of foreign populations, the U.S. has built resentment across the world.

For America to thrive in a post-imperial world, it must embrace real international cooperation—not as a façade for control, but as a new guiding principle.

That means no longer treating foreign aid as a tool for leverage. No more backing brutal regimes that serve U.S. interests while claiming to stand for democracy. No more hollow diplomatic summits that serve as little more than photo ops. Instead, America must prove its commitment to justice, human rights, and economic fairness—not just demand that others follow rules it has long ignored.

4. Practicing Democracy at Home Before Preaching It Abroad

Perhaps the greatest contradiction in American foreign policy has been its willingness to export democracy abroad while eroding it at home.

The world does not see America as the "leader of the free world" when its own elections are mired in corruption, its political system is paralyzed by corporate influence, and its institutions are being eroded from within. If the U.S. truly cares about democracy abroad, it must first rebuild its own democracy.

This means ending voter suppression. It means confronting the rise of authoritarianism within its own borders before pointing fingers elsewhere. It means restoring faith in government by actually making it work for the people—not just for the wealthy and powerful.

America’s credibility in the world will never be restored by force—it will only be restored by example.

America’s Last Chance to Evolve

Every empire in history has believed itself to be exceptional. Every empire has convinced itself that its dominance is eternal. But history has proven, time and again, that empires collapse not because they are conquered from the outside, but because they fail to adapt.

America is now at that crossroads. It can cling to an outdated model of global power that is rapidly becoming unworkable, or it can embrace a new vision of leadership—one based on cooperation, stability, and genuine strength.

Trump’s brand of nationalism is a dead end. So is nostalgia for the pre-Trump era. The only path forward is something new—something post-imperial, but no less ambitious.

Because if America fails to evolve, history has already made clear what happens next. No empire lasts forever. The only question is whether America can survive beyond its empire—or collapse with it.

Thanks for reading TRUTH SPEAKS! Vance has spent years remaking himself. First, he was the conservative intellectual, the earnest critic of Trumpism, positioning himself as the voice of a more principled right. Then, when that persona failed to deliver power, he shed it like a second skin, reemerging as a firebrand MAGA loyalist. And somewhere in that transformation— between abandoning his previous convictions and embracing the very movement he once denounced—he found a new faith.

Vance’s conversion to Catholicism was not the quiet work of spiritual reckoning. It was the final brushstroke in his self-portrait as a champion of the religious right, a man reborn in both ideology and theology. But faith, at least as Christianity defines it, is not a costume one wears to better fit the political moment. And now, the leader of his chosen religion has made that painfully clear.

“But Vance isn’t just an individual case. He’s the perfect symbol of what the modern Christian right has become. A movement that once claimed to stand for ‘faith and values’ has abandoned both in its desperate grasp for political power.”

In a letter to American bishops, Pope Francis condemned the Trump administration’s mass deportation policies—not just as cruel, but as a moral failure, a betrayal of the Christian commandment to care for the vulnerable. He did not name names. But one man had taken it upon himself to defend these policies, to rationalize their brutality as righteous governance: J.D. Vance.

And therein lies the deepest irony. Here is a man who aligned himself with a faith whose central figure was a refugee, only to turn around and champion policies that would have condemned that very refugee family to death. It is a hypocrisy so glaring, so absolute, that even the leader of his church could not ignore it.

But Vance isn’t just an individual case. He’s the perfect symbol of what the modern Christian right has become. A movement that once claimed to stand for “faith and values” has abandoned both in its desperate grasp for political power. Their gospel is no longer the one Jesus preached—it’s whatever helps them stay in control. And that’s precisely what Pope Francis was calling out.

The Bible Is a Story of Refugees

“The Old Testament doesn’t depict a God who is neutral in the struggle between the powerful and the powerless. He takes sides. And He is always on the side of the vulnerable.”

Long before Jesus arrived on the scene, the defining event of Jewish history was an act of mass migration. The Exodus story—the Israelites fleeing slavery in Egypt—isn’t just a tale of survival. It’s the foundation of the Old Testament’s entire moral vision. infant Jesus fleeing to Egypt to escape King Herod’s massacre—a reminder that the central figure of Christianity began his life as a refugee.

Christian conservatives like J.D. Vance claim to worship Jesus Christ. But their policies reveal that they either don’t understand His story—or they don’t care. Because the most famous refugee in history was Jesus Himself.

Jesus wasn’t born into wealth or power. His family was poor. His mother, Mary, was a teenage girl. His earthly father, Joseph, was a working-class carpenter. And shortly after Jesus was born, they were forced to flee.

King Herod, fearing a challenge to his rule, ordered the murder of every male child under the age of two in Bethlehem. To escape, Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt with their infant son, seeking asylum in a foreign land.

Now imagine if Egypt had Trump and Vance’s immigration policies. Imagine they had closed their borders and sent Jesus and His family back to Bethlehem. Christianity would have ended before it even began.

Thankfully, Egypt gave them refuge. And Jesus grew into a man who would challenge every earthly power with His radical vision of love.

Who Is Your Neighbor?

“For Jesus, there were no outsiders. No one was beyond love. And to claim to follow Him while embracing cruelty is, in His own words, a lie.”

For Jesus, faith wasn’t about religious ritual or national identity. It was about how you loved and cared for others—especially those different from yourself. When asked to define the command to “love your neighbor as yourself,” Jesus didn’t give a legalistic answer. He told a story.

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, a Jewish man is attacked by robbers and left for dead. A priest walks by. A Levite (a member of the presitly clan) walks by. Both see him, both know God’s commands to love the stranger and care for the vulnerable—and both ignore him. Then, a Samaritan—a member of a group Jews despised—stops to help. He bandages the man’s wounds, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care.

Jesus then asks, “Which of these three was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The answer is obvious: the one who showed mercy.

This was a radical story. for several reasons. Jews and Samaritans had hated each other for centuries. And yet Jesus chose to make a Samaritan, not a priest, the moral hero. More fundamentally, He was making it clear: your neighbor isn’t just the person who looks like you or worships like you. Your neighbor is the person you’ve been told to hate.

This ties directly into one of Jesus’ most revolutionary teachings found in Matthew 5:43-44:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

For Jesus, there were no outsiders. No one was beyond love. And to claim to follow Him while embracing cruelty is, in His own words, a lie.

A Religion of Convenience

At this point, some will say: “Sure, Christianity teaches love and compassion, but we can’t base immigration policy on it. It’s just not practical.”

What they usually mean is that it would be inconvenient to treat migrants humanely.

But when did Jesus ever call His followers to prioritize convenience? Jesus calls us to do plenty of things that are difficult, uncomfortable, and inconvenient. It’s hard to love people we want to hate. It’s hard to forgive those who have wronged us. It’s hard to lay down our lives in service to others instead of thinking only about ourselves. But the entire point of Christianity is that following Jesus means doing what is right—not what is easy.

That’s why Jesus warned in Matthew 7:13-14:

“Broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

If your Christianity can’t handle inconvenience, then it was never Christianity to begin with.

But beyond practicality, what’s most disturbing is the sheer joy that some Trump-aligned Christians take in cruelty. They don’t see deportations as a tragic necessity. They revel in them. They cheer for suffering. They mock the desperate. They celebrate policies that separate families and throw children into detention centers.

If this isn’t a rejection of Jesus, what is?

<a That was never in question. But even after years of watching him shred legal norms and defy accountability, his recent actions have managed to stun even those who thought they could no longer be shocked, myself excluded.

Legal experts have sounded the alarm, warning that never in American history has a president so brazenly disregarded the Constitution and the rule of law. They call this a “constitutional crisis.”

That is wrong. Not just because the term is inadequate, but because it fundamentally misdiagnoses what we are living through.

“This is not a constitutional crisis. It is a coup. That is not an exaggeration. It is not hyperbole. It is a plain description of reality.”

First, this is not one constitutional crisis—it is several, each unfolding simultaneously. Trump is not testing the limits of the system in a single way; he is dismantling multiple guardrails at once, overwhelming the ability of institutions to respond.

But more importantly, the terminology of “constitutional crisis” is descriptively inaccurate. This is not a constitutional crisis. It is a coup. That is not an exaggeration. It is not hyperbole. It is a plain description of reality. And if we cannot bring ourselves to say it, we will never do what is necessary to stop it.

Calling this a “constitutional crisis” assumes that the system is still functioning—that the checks and balances designed to constrain executive power are intact but temporarily strained.

That is not the case.

The mechanisms of constitutional government are not just malfunctioning—they are nonfunctioning. The Republican-controlled Congress has already surrendered its role as a check on the executive, and federal agencies are being purged to ensure loyalty to Trump. And now, the courts—the last remaining institutional guardrail—are being openly defied.

With no branch of government left willing or able to constrain him, Trump will no longer be a president operating outside his authority—he will be an unrestrained tyrant, ruling by force rather than law. The Constitution will be extinct. American democracy, in any meaningful sense, will cease to exist. This is not hyperbole. It is an honest description of what is happening.

And yet, in the face of all this, elected Democrats are doing nothing. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has already signaled that Democrats will not refuse to raise the debt ceiling—a move that Republicans have routinely used to force concessions and sow chaos whenever they were in the minority. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has all but admitted that Democrats have no real plan because they lack power in Congress or the White House.

The problem with these statements—of which there are several—is that they reflect a fundamental failure to understand the nature of the moment. These Democrats are still thinking within the rules and norms of the constitutional system that existed in America from 1791, the time of the Constitution’s ratification, to January 20, 2025—the day that system ceased to function.

“Democrats cannot respond to an illegal seizure of power by wondering what the Constitution permits them to do. They must ask what it will take to stop Trump—whether the Constitution allows it or not.”

It is true that, under the old order, there is little Democrats can do through constitutional means. They do not hold the presidency or a majority in either chamber of Congress. But their mistake is in assuming that the only legitimate response to Trump’s lawlessness is to stay within constitutional bounds, as if the Constitution still governs how power operates in this country.

Trump did not begin his unlawful takeover by asking what powers properly belonged to him under the American Constitution. He seized whatever power he wanted, whenever he wanted, and dared anyone to stop him. Democrats cannot respond to an illegal seizure of power by wondering what the Constitution permits them to do. They must ask what it will take to stop Trump—whether the Constitution allows it or not.

The foundation of American democracy has always been the explicit social contract embodied in the Constitution—an agreement that all political actors, regardless of party, have observed for centuries. But a contract cannot function if one party unilaterally decides to violate its terms while insisting that the other party remain bound by them. At that point, the contract is null and void.

If Trump is willing to shatter the constitutional order, then Democrats must abandon the assumption that normal political responses will suffice. They must begin considering actions that would have previously been unthinkable in any period of American history outside of the Civil War—the last time the Constitution ceased to function as the governing framework of the nation. That may sound extreme, but it’s the truth of where we are now as a country and, increasingly, where we’re headed.

The American constitutional order is not just a compact between the three branches of the federal government—it is also an agreement between the federal government and the states. James Madison, the principal architect of the Constitution, famously argued that the sheer size and decentralized nature of the American republic would serve as a bulwark against tyranny. For most of American history, that was only an abstract principle. Now, in the unfolding implementation of Project 2025, we know exactly what he meant.

Right now, the Trump administration is actively centralizing all federal power within the executive branch. The goal is simple: to consolidate the entire machinery of government under the control of the presidency. Trying to fight this from within the federal government—without control of the presidency itself—is a losing battle. And Trump knows that. That is why the fight must shift to the states.

After Trump’s re-election last year, a rumor began circulating online that Gavin Newsom had suggested California would consider withholding federal tax revenue if Trump ignored the rule of law. Though Newsom himself never actually proposed this, the fact that it resonated so widely speaks to a deeper truth.

When I first heard about the tax withholding idea, I was skeptical—not because I doubted that such extreme action might be necessary in the face of Trump’s even more extreme lawlessness, but because I understood exactly what such a move would mean. The only word to describe it is secession—via economic means.

That word carries heavy historical weight and controversy for understandable reasons. The last time states attempted to secede from the Union, they did so in the name of protecting an indefensible system built on the enslavement of human beings. The Civil War forever cemented secession as an inherently reactionary, morally distasteful act in the American imagination.

But this would not be that kind of secession. First of all, this would be entirely nonviolent. It would not be an armed rebellion but a form of economic resistance—a strategic effort to deny an unlawful government the resources it needs to function. In effect, it would be a set of economic sanctions, imposed not by a foreign adversary, but by a coalition of states refusing to finance the destruction of American democracy.

Secondly, unlike the first secession, this would not be an attempt to dismantle democracy but an attempt to preserve it in the face of a leader who has openly declared his intention to rule without limits. It would not be a rebellion against the Union, but a defense of the principles on which it was founded.

To be clear, I am not advocating for this. I am simply pointing out that if Trump continues to act without any respect for the rule of law or the Constitution, we will be forced into a conversation that no one in America ever expected to have again—a conversation about whether states must act independently to protect the democratic order when the federal government itself has become its greatest threat.

How Economic Secession Would Work

The states best positioned to lead this effort are, unsurprisingly, the Democratic-leaning blue states. The federal tax system is fundamentally lopsided—with blue states paying more into the system than they get back, while red states are disproportionately reliant on federal spending. In other words, blue states are the economic backbone of the federal government, while many red states operate at a deficit, dependent on federal aid.

In 2022, for example:

California contributed $83.1 billion more in federal taxes than it received in federal funding, making it the largest “donor state” by a wide margin.

Three of the top five states with the highest balance of payments (BOPs) with the federal government were blue states. (Virginia, New Mexico, Maryland).

On a per capita basis, blue states were the top four “donor states” that paid the most revenue to the federal government. (California, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington)

Meanwhile, red states are overwhelmingly dependent on federal funds:

Mississippi, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Alabama all receive far more in federal spending than they contribute in taxes.

In 2018, for every dollar Kentucky paid in federal taxes, it received $2.61 in federal spending.

Mississippi’s ratio was even higher—getting $2.73 for every $1 contributed.

The biggest logistical challenge to withholding federal tax revenue is that income taxes are paid directly to the federal government, bypassing state control. To stop the flow of funds, states would need to pass emergency legislation instructing employers to redirect federal tax withholdings into a state-controlled escrow account instead of sending them to the IRS. These funds would be held by the state rather than immediately transferred to the federal government, effectively blocking access to billions in tax revenue. Businesses would be caught between conflicting state and federal laws, triggering a legal and political crisis that would force a showdown over Trump’s authority.

The economic fallout from a coordinated blue-state tax revolt would be immediate and severe. The federal government relies on a steady and uninterrupted flow of tax revenue to fund its operations, service its debt, and maintain basic financial stability. In 2020, blue states alone accounted for approximately 60% of all federal tax revenue. If even half of that revenue were withheld, it would cripple federal operations overnight, starving the Trump administration of the funds it needs to function. The consequences would be felt across every sector of government—forcing difficult trade-offs between military spending, social programs, and debt payments.

The impact would extend far beyond Washington. The U.S. bond market would immediately panic, as investors watching the federal government lose a massive share of its revenue would begin dumping Treasury securities. Credit downgrades would follow, making it drastically more expensive for the government to borrow money. Markets would spiral, businesses would pull back on hiring and investment, and the economy would tilt toward a self-inflicted financial crisis—all of it traceable directly to Trump’s lawlessness.

If any of this sounds extreme—and it is—just remember that Republicans in Congress routinely threaten the same kind of economic destruction every time they play games with the debt ceiling. Where they are willing to risk a catastrophic default on U.S. debt just to score political points or force meaningless concessions, we would be doing it to save democracy.

Trump is, at his core, a bully. And bullies only respond to force. You cannot cajole them, negotiate with them, or appeal to their conscience—because they have none. It doesn’t matter if you hate them, judge them, or condemn them. As long as you can’t stop them, they don’t care. The only thing that defeats power is greater power. And the only way to stop a bully is for someone to finally tell them “no”—and have the strength to back it up.

“The most important lesson Trump must learn is that there are consequences for his actions . . . If he continues down this path, he must discover—not through words, but through action—that there are people with the power to do things to him that he will not like.”

Trump has never shown much interest in policy, governance, or the Constitution. But two things reliably get his attention: his precious “ratings” and the stock market. He has tied his political identity to economic performance, routinely pointing to stock market highs as evidence of his success. A financial meltdown caused by his own power grabs would create a powerful disincentive for further authoritarian overreach—one he could not ignore.

The most important lesson Trump must learn is that there are consequences for his actions. Up until now, he has operated with total impunity, convinced that no institution, no court, and no political opposition can actually stop him. That has to change. If he continues down this path, he must discover—not through words, but through action—that there are people with the power to do things to him that he will not like.

Anticipating the Response

If blue states were to take any of these actions, they would immediately face legal challenges. The courts would almost certainly rule—unanimously and without hesitation—that states withholding federal tax revenue is unconstitutional. Federal judges, including those appointed by Democratic presidents, would reaffirm the supremacy of federal authority, citing constitutional provisions and precedent that prohibit states from waging economic war against the federal government.

In any other era, this would be the end of the discussion. But binding judicial authority only exists in a system where all sides agree to abide by the courts’ rulings. That was the norm under America 1.0—before Trump 2.0 rewrote the rules of governance.

“If one side in a constitutional order unilaterally declares itself above the law, the other side is not bound to remain shackled by it.”

Trump’s team has already made clear that they do not believe he is bound by court rulings that go against him. His administration has openly stated that he would ignore judicial decisions that constrain his power, particularly on issues like immigration and the prosecution of his political enemies. Figures like Elon Musk and JD Vance are openly normalizing the idea that Trump should ignore judicial rulings, amplifying posts that encourage his administration to simply disregard the courts.

If the sitting president refuses to respect the authority of the courts, then why should Democratic states feel obligated to do so, especially when doing so only serves to reinforce Trump’s unchecked rule? If one side in a constitutional order unilaterally declares itself above the law, the other side is not bound to remain shackled by it.

Of course, if blue states were to follow through on an economic rebellion against the federal government, no one would expect Trump to simply take it on the chin. Dictators generally do not tolerate resistance to their dictatorship. Trump has already spoken openly about shooting protestors and invoking the Insurrection Act to crush domestic opposition.

If Democratic states were to withhold tax revenues or block federal control over assets within their borders, Trump would almost certainly label it an illegal insurrection or rebellion—a deeply ironic accusation from the man who incited an actual insurrection. His response would be swift and aggressive. The first move would likely be to arrest and detain Democratic governors, state officials, and other political leaders under the pretext of restoring “law & order.” Federal troops could be deployed to seize control of key infrastructure, military bases, and state capitols. If state-level resistance escalated, Trump could escalate further, using overwhelming military force to suppress any opposition.

Blue states must anticipate this and be prepared to counteract it. At the moment they decide to launch an economic boycott against the federal government, they must also be prepared, if necessary, to take immediate steps to neutralize the coercive power of the federal government within their borders. This means seizing control of military bases, blockading federal buildings, and cutting off logistical support to federal law enforcement. It means preventing federal troops from mobilizing, obstructing the movement of federal resources, and making it logistically impossible for Trump to reassert his authority. If blue states wait for Trump to weaponize the full force of the federal government against them, it will be too late.

None of this is what I hope for or want for the country. I personally do not advocate for any of these extreme measures. But if Trump succeeds in dismantling the Constitution and consolidating authoritarian rule, we have to ask ourselves what we, as Americans, are prepared to do about it.

It is important to emphasize that while we are not yet at the point where these drastic actions will be necessary, we are speeding toward it. That is why we must start thinking about these questions now. No matter how unpleasant, no matter how previously unimaginable, we have to confront them before they become reality.

The idea that we can simply wait for the next presidential election, or even the midterms in two years, is a comfortable but dangerous illusion. The assumption underlying that thinking is that Trump’s rule will be constrained by normal political cycles, that his presidency will operate within the framework of elections and institutional checks.

That assumption is false.

The most alarming aspect of the past few weeks is that none of Trump’s most blatantly illegal actions have required congressional approval. He has not waited for Congress to pass laws enabling his power grabs; he has simply done what he wanted, without regard for legal or constitutional constraints. The traditional levers of legislative opposition—the ability to retake Congress, the idea of passing new laws to block Trump’s agenda—are meaningless if Trump governs by executive fiat and refuses to acknowledge any limits on his authority.

If this continues, then Democrats winning Congress in 2026 will accomplish nothing. As long as Trump controls the executive agencies, federal law enforcement, and the military, he will act as if he is the sole source of power in the country. And if there is no force capable of stopping him, then for all intents and purposes, he will be right.

Jason Chukwuma (@truthispeaking) is the creator of TRUTH IS SPEAKING on YouTube and the TRUTH SPEAKS newsletter on Substack, delivering sharp commentary on politics, news, and culture. By old rules, I mean, of course, the US Constitution.”

The second Trump administration has, in record time, shed any pretense of being constrained by law, precedent, or even the most basic constitutional principles.

It began immediately, with Trump’s first act upon reentering the White House—a sweeping executive order that purported to repeal birthright citizenship, a right enshrined in the 14th Amendment for over 150 years. Then came the financial power grab, where the administration, displeased with Congress’s pesky authority over government spending, issued a directive refusing to spend billions in appropriated funds, claiming an invented presidential power of impoundment.

The administration then followed up with a scheme that would have made Richard Nixon blush: allowing the faux “non-government” agency DOGE to access to Americans’ sensitive person information and financial data, all under the direction of Trump’s favorite billionaire, Elon Musk.

And then there was the attempted government shutdown—engineered entirely by the White House—where Trump issued an executive order defunding parts of the federal government, as if Congress’s control over appropriations were merely a suggestion rather than a constitutional requirement. The administration has fired inspectors general at a scale that makes past purges look quaint, turning agencies into little more than personal loyalty clubs.

“It’s not just disregard for the law that Trump and his cronies display; it’s a wholesale reimagining of presidential power as absolute, constrained only by what Trump and his circle can get away with.”

Luckily, the most extreme of these actions—including the repeal of birthright citizenship, the funding freeze, and DOGE’s access to sensitive Treasury information—have been blocked by the courts.

But if you think that means this fight is over, think again. And no, I’m not talking about the far-right Supreme Court eventually swooping in to take Trump’s side. I’m talking about something even more dangerous: a president who simply doesn’t care what the courts say.

This administration isn’t playing by the old rules. By old rules, I mean, of course, the US Constitution. norms and insist that, actually, this is just a routine backyard cookout.

And Vance is the best in the business. His latest contribution? The claim that the president is unanswerable to anyone but himself, that as a matter of constitutional law, judges cannot tell the president what to do. This isn’t just sycophantic nonsense—it’s a full-throated endorsement of unchecked, absolute executive power. It’s the kind of argument that, in another time, would have been laughed out of the room or brought up charges of treason if uttered in earnest by those entrusted with public power. Now, it’s the governing philosophy of the new presidential administration.

We should be shocked. We should be horrified. And yet, after watching this administration erase one fundamental legal norm after another, all with barely a speed bump of resistance, the only thing left to be surprised by is our own lack of surprise. This is how it starts. The open contempt for legality. The public justifications for lawlessness. The insistence that institutions meant to constrain power are, in fact, powerless. And before long, what starts as rhetoric becomes reality.

I’ll be doing a YouTube video in the coming weeks breaking down exactly this—how the Trump team is laying the foundation to undermine democracy by dismantling the authority of the courts. We need to be prepared for what happens when the previously unthinkable becomes our day-to-day reality. Because the writing is on the wall. And the only question left is whether we’re going to pretend we can’t see it.

What I’m Listening To – This week, I’ve got West End Girls by the Pet Shop Boys on repeat. There’s just something about those vocals—cool, detached, effortlessly hypnotic—layered over that beat, which is downright infectious. It’s the kind of track that sneaks up on you, and before you know it, you’re moving. A synth-pop masterpiece that still hits decades later.

Thank You to My Patrons!

A huge shoutout to my Patreon subscribers who help keep this platform alive.
